Interest in Happiness

[3:38] Welcome to the show Mike! How did you get in to happiness?
I've always been a happy person. I have a great family life too. I first got into happiness at a "Learning and the Brain" conference in San Francisco. As a teacher and a father, it really inspired me and prompted me to write my book "Teaching Happiness and Innovation"

[4:51] Sometimes you feel like happiness either happens to you or doesn't. How do you teach happiness?
The science of happiness has evolved over the last 20 or 30 years . As we understand more about the brain and what is going on we've discovered that we can shape our emotions based on our habits. If you want to be a happier person there are certain things you can do that will make happiness more likely for you, your kids and anyone else in your life.

Habits of Happiness

[5:47] So you can learn these things and be in control of your own happiness?
Yes, we don't have to wait and hope that happiness will descend from the heavens we can go out and create it.

[6:05] What are some of these habits that you teach people?
One very simple thing we can implement in our own lives is gratitude. People who are grateful tend to be happier and more successful in life. Many are "wired to whine" but with practice you can turn that around and be hard wired for gratitude and be much happier as a result.

[7:16] Just being outside seems to make me happier and improve my mood. Is there something going on with that as well?
Whenever we move and exercise there are a lot of different chemicals that are released in the brain. One of them is dopamine which psychologists refer to as the happiness neurotransmitter. So the more exercise we get, especially exercise outside, the happier we're going to be.
